The city of Mykolaiv in Ukraine suffered a powerful explosion early Saturday, killing at least 21 people when Russian missiles attacked an apartment near the port of Odesa in the Black Sea, the mayor said the day after officials said.
The air raid siren rang across the Mykolaiv area, which is adjacent to the important port of Odessa, before the blast.
“There is a powerful explosion in the city! Stay in the shelter!” Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevich writes about the Telegram messaging app.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. Reuters was unable to validate the report on its own.
The explosion flattened part of the apartment building while the inhabitants slept on Friday, another in a series of what Ukraine says is a Russian missile attack aimed at civilians.
In a video speech every night on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the strike of “a conscious and deliberately targeted Russian terrorist attack, not some sort of error or accidental missile strike.”
Kieu says Moscow has intensified its long-range missile attacks and attacked civilian targets far from the front lines. Russia says it is targeting military installations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov quoted President Vladimir Putin as saying, “Russian troops are not cooperating with private targets.”
Earlier this week, Russian missiles attacked a crowded shopping center in central Ukraine, killing at least 19 people.
Thousands of civilians have been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 and Moscow called it a “special operation” to eradicate nationalists. Ukraine and its western allies say it is a war of aggression.
Residents of the resort village Serhiivka near Odessa helped workers pick up the rubble of a nine-story apartment that was partially destroyed by a strike early Friday morning.
“We came to the scene, evaluated the situation with rescuers and locals, and helped those who survived and unfortunately died. We helped take them away. “Oleksandr Abramov, who lived nearby and was in a hurry, said. The scene when he heard the blast.
Serhiy Bratuk, a spokesman for the Odessa local government, said it was confirmed that 21 people had been killed, including a 12-year-old boy.
According to Brachuk, the area will have a Saturday memorial day for those killed during the attack.
The Serhiivka strike took place shortly after Russia withdrew its troops from the strategically important outcrop of Snake Island, about 140 km (85 miles) southeast of Odesa, and was seized on the first day of the war.

Ukrainian Chief of the General Staff Valerii Zaluzhny accused Russia of failing to follow the allegations that Russia had left Snake Island as a “good faith gesture.” Zaluzhny said on his Telegram messaging app channel that two Russian fighters took off from a Crimean base and bombed an island target on Friday night.
He posted a video of what he said was an attack. Reuters could not confirm the authenticity of the video or the Russian behavior depicted. There were no immediate Russian comments.
Russian troops used Snake Island to block the northwestern Black Sea and blockade Ukraine, one of the world’s largest grain exporters.
Moscow denies that it is due to the food crisis. It says it is because Western sanctions are damaging its exports.
President Putin met with Indonesian President on Thursday and spoke to the Prime Minister of India on Friday, promising Russia to remain a major supplier of grain to both major food importers.
Valery Gerasimov, General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, visited Russian troops involved in Moscow’s “special military operations” in Ukraine, the Pentagon said Saturday. It was unknown whether Gerasimov traveled to Ukrainian territory.
Russia’s enhanced campaign for missile attacks on Ukrainian cities is in line with its troops on the eastern battlefield, with the aim of ceding the provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk to Ukraine.
Moscow has been on the verge of occupying Luhansk since it occupied the city of Sieviero Donetsk last week after the fierce battle of the war.
The eastern city of Severodonetsk has been heavily bombarded and missile-attacked by Russian troops.

The last Ukrainian fortress in Luhansk is Lysychans’k, which is likely to be surrounded by Russian artillery.
“The houses in the attacked villages are burning out one by one,” Luhansk Oblast Governor Serhiy Gaidai said in Telegram. The density of the bombardment is so high that there is only time to protect the injured. Fires at multiple locations at the same time. There is little time to get rid of a large fire in Lysychans’k. “
Pablo Kirirenko, the governor of the Donetsk region, said Russian bombardment killed four civilians in the region and injured 12 on Friday.
Ukrainian generals reported on Friday a widespread Russian bombardment, including Kharkiv in the north, and a bombardment of Ukrainian positions in the border area between Smy and Chernihiv.
More weapons are needed in eastern and southern Ukraine, according to Zelensky, and the Pentagon has sent two NASAMS surface-to-air missile systems, four additional counter-battery radars and ammunition to the United States as part of its latest weapons package. Announced that.
