There are many ways to save on airfare.
But booking a flight for a specific day of the week isn’t one of them, according to Google Flights data.
Mid-week appointments — Especially around midnight on a Tuesday — Often cited as the best time to buy airline tickets. However, over the past five years, US airfares purchased on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays have been, on average, only 1.9% cheaper than those purchased on weekends, according to Google Flights.

The day of the week travelers book doesn’t matter much, but the flight date does, according to a Google Flights study that looked at five years of historical flight data from August 1, 2017 to August 1, 2022. .
“Flights departing on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday are on average 12% cheaper than flights departing on weekends,” Byers wrote. “Excluding international destinations, the potential savings jump to an additional 20%.”
According to Google Flights, travelers looking to save money should avoid flights on Sundays.

Another popular strategy, booking early, also works, according to the data. Airfares for domestic flights in the United States were lowest eight weeks before his departure date from his three weeks before departure, and “bottomed out” 44 days later, according to the study.
Direct flights are on average around 20% more expensive than connecting flights, according to Google Flights, but flights with stops also carry a higher risk of disruption.
An Instagram poll by travel insurance company World Nomads found that more than one in three respondents said they would spend up to $250 on flights, meals or hotels due to flight delays or cancellations this summer, and 12% reported spending between $500 and $1,000.
Travelers with flexible flight dates can use Google Flights’ “date grid” feature to quickly see the cheapest departure and arrival dates for a given week.
If you want to travel for a specific period (for example, 2 weeks) but want to be flexible with the timing, you can also use the ‘Price Graph’ feature to see the cheapest time of year.
Fare tracking also eliminates the need for multiple searches to see the fare for the route you want. Find your route once, hit the “Track Price” button and Google Flights will email you any airfare changes.
Google Flights will also suggest “best times” to book flights for peak travel and popular routes based on historical data.
Travelers looking to save on airfare to Europe are advised to plan as early as possible, while summer vacationers may consider planning weeks in advance rather than months.
