Chinese artificial intelligence stocks fell Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal reported The US is planning to impose new restrictions on shipments of AI chips to China.
According to the magazine, U.S. chip makers are Nvidia We will be affected by this move, which could take place as early as July.
Nvidia manufactures the graphics chips that power the technology behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT, alphabetbard chatbot.
China’s CSI artificial intelligence index fell 3% in Asian markets on Wednesday following the news. Stocks traded in Shenzhen are Inspar Electronic Information Industry fell 10%, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Chengdu Information Technology also fell nearly 8%. These companies primarily manufacture computers and software.
Other Chinese AI plays also fell.of Hong Kong-listed shares Alibaba – which Launch your own version of viral chatbot ChatGPT — down about 1.6%, Tencent,in short Build your own AI modelfell 1.58%.
The WSJ, citing sources familiar with the matter, said the United States is growing more concerned about whether China can make technological progress with AI.
According to the report, the U.S. Department of Commerce could “suspend shipments of chips made by NVIDIA and other chipmakers to customers in China and other countries of concern without obtaining a prior license.”
The Commerce Department did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment outside of normal business hours.
Such a move would expand U.S. efforts to block China from advanced chip technology.
