The head of the IRS asked the Treasury’s internal observers to investigate the Treasury’s tax audits of two men who were frequently criticized by the former president. Donald Trump: Former FBI Director James Comey and Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.
The inquiry was announced the following Thursday The New York Times reported Both Comey and McCabe had a very rare audit.
According to The Times, Comey has been audited for 2017 and 2019 federal tax returns. McCabe has been audited for the 2019 federal tax return.
Trump, who appointed the current Commissioner of Internal Revenue, Charles Rettig, to his post served as president from January 2017 to January 2021.
The Times said that only about one of the 30,600 tax filers was audited for 2017 filings. According to the IRS databook, only 0.55% of individual tax returns were audited for all tax returns filed during the 2011-2019 tax year.
“The IRS referred to and considered this issue with the Treasury Department’s Tax Administration,” said Jodie Reynolds, a spokesman for the IRS, a division of the Treasury Department.
“IRS Commissioner Rettig contacted TIGTA directly after receiving inquiries from the press,” said Reynolds.
Trump fired Comey as FBI Director in 2017 as the Bureau was investigating possible relationships between members of Trump’s 2016 presidential election and Russia.
McCabe himself, who took over as acting FBI director, was dismissed by Jeff Sessions, then Trump’s then Attorney General, a few days before McCabe retired and was eligible for full pension benefits.

“It’s just unreasonable to think that other factors aren’t involved,” McCabe said, referring to the idea that audit targets are randomly selected. Both McCabe and Comey were told in a letter that their return was so chosen.
“I think that’s a reasonable question,” McCabe said. “I think we should investigate. People need to trust government agencies, which is why they need to dig into this to find out what happened.”
“Federal privacy law prohibits discussions about the situation of certain taxpayers. Audits are handled by career civilians, and the IRS protects the testing process and politics,” said Reynolds, a spokesperson for the IRS. It has strong safeguards to protect against motivated audits. “
“It’s ridiculously untrue to suggest that senior IRS officials have somehow targeted specific individuals subject to audits in national research programs,” Reynolds said.
But on Thursday, New Jersey Democrat Bill Pascrell, a harsh critic of Retig, reiterated his request for the IRS chief to be dismissed by the president. Joe Biden In the light of an audit report he called a “huge scandal.”
“If you think Donald Trump’s alleged enemy audit is a random act of God, I have a bridge in North Jersey where I want to sell you,” said Director Houseways and Chairman of the Means Subcommittee. Said Pasclar.
“There may be no group on this planet that deserves more suspicion than Donald Trump and his government enabler,” lawmakers said. “The IRS under Donald Trump’s carefully selected commissioner, Charles Rettig, has been catastrophic one after another.”
