The Department of Road Safety announced on Friday that it will begin a special investigation into the Florida accident that killed a 66-year-old Tesla driver and a 67-year-old passenger.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Tesla in 2015 crashed into a tractor trailer parked in the Gainesville area at the rest area of Interstate 75. Both Tesla people from Lompoc, California were declared dead on the scene. A patrol spokesman said it was unclear if autopilot was being used.
On Thursday, NHTSA confirmed that it had begun a special investigation into a deadly pedestrian collision in California related to the 2018 Tesla Model 3, which was suspected of using advanced driver assistance systems.
NHTSA has previously launched 36 special crash investigations, including a California crash. Tesla Vehicles suspected of using advanced driver assistance systems such as autopilot since 2016.
These Tesla investigations reported deaths from a total of 17 accidents, including the one in Florida.
NHTSA typically launches over 100 special collision investigations each year on emerging technologies and other potential vehicle safety issues that previously helped develop airbag safety rules.
Tesla, which disbanded the press office, did not respond to requests for comment.
The Florida crash is similar to the series of crashes NHTSA is investigating.
In June, NHTSA upgraded its defect investigation to an 830,000 Tesla vehicle with an autopilot. This is a necessary step before requesting a recall.
NHTSA launched a preliminary assessment to assess the system performance of 765,000 vehicles after approximately 12 collisions with a stopped emergency vehicle by Tesla’s vehicle, identifying six more collisions last month. I said that I did.
NHTSA administrator Steven Cliff told Reuters Wednesday that the Tesla Autopilot investigation “wants to be completed as soon as possible, but I also want to get it right. There is a lot of information we need to look up.”
